My Role:

Strategy, website, and local search

Stocky's Custom Carpentry started with a business Instagram and four Google reviews.

The business posted to its Instagram account once or twice a month and shared those posts to a Facebook page. There was no website, no Yelp or Houzz listing, and no routine for asking customers to leave reviews.

Someone searching online for a Billings carpenter, remodeler, or home builder would have found very little about what the business does or where it works.

What I built

I focused on four things: the website, the Google profile, reviews, and listings.

A website with a page for each kind of work

I built a website for Stocky's Custom Carpentry where each type of work has its own page: garage builds, custom built-ins, kitchen and bathroom remodels, finish carpentry, decks and outdoor structures, and residential construction. Each page explains the work in plain language and says where the business works, so the site answers the questions customers are likely to be searching for.

A Google profile that says what the business does

The business already had a Google Business Profile. I optimized it so it clearly shows what the business does and where it works.

A review routine built into every job

I had Joe, the owner, text past clients a direct link to leave a Google review, and I showed him how to copy that link into every invoice he sends. Asking for a review is now a regular part of finishing a job. The business went from 4 Google reviews to 10 in about a week, and the six new reviews are all five stars.

Listings on the sites customers use

I created Yelp and Houzz profiles for the business so that customers searching on those sites can find it too. Together with the website and Google profile, these listings give search engines, voice assistants, and AI tools more places to find accurate information about the business.

What happened

Within four months of the website going live, six people contacted the business through the form on the site and became paying clients.

I kept working on the site each month, monitoring performance data and making updates. Based on what people in Billings were searching for, I built a new page for garage builds that now drives many new site visits.

The Google profile also got busier. Compared with the previous summer, profile views are up 75%, and calls from the profile are more than three times as high. ChatGPT has also begun sending visitors to the website.

The pieces work together: the website explains the work, the Google profile and listings make the business easy to find, and the reviews give new customers a reason to call.
